Singapore sits just one degree north of the equator, which means our interiors are constantly battling humidity levels that regularly exceed 80%. Traditional plaster, gypsum board, and even some timber ceilings can warp, crack, stain, or grow mould over time. Stretch ceilings were engineered specifically to address these challenges.
The Material Science Behind It
Cellux stretch ceiling membranes are manufactured from a high-grade PVC polymer that is inherently moisture-resistant. Unlike porous materials, PVC does not absorb water vapour — it simply lets it pass through or repel off the surface. This means no swelling, no warping, and no unsightly water stains even in high-humidity rooms like bathrooms, kitchens, or poorly ventilated storerooms.
Designed for Tropical Temperatures
Our membranes are rated for continuous temperatures between 5°C and 55°C — well within Singapore's ambient range. The material maintains its shape, tension, and colour without degradation, even when air-conditioning is used heavily, causing frequent thermal cycling between cool indoor and hot outdoor conditions.
"After 5 years in our Queenstown HDB, the Cellux ceiling looks exactly as it did on installation day. Not a single crack or stain — something we cannot say about our previous plaster ceiling." — Homeowner, Queenstown
Water Retention: A Hidden Benefit
One of the most underappreciated features of a stretch ceiling in Singapore is its ability to hold water. If a pipe bursts or your upstairs neighbour has a leak, a properly installed stretch ceiling can temporarily contain up to 100 litres of water — giving you time to call a plumber before your furniture and flooring are damaged. Simply drain the water through the membrane, and the ceiling returns to its original shape.
Mould and Bacteria Resistance
Standard Cellux membranes include an antimicrobial additive that inhibits the growth of mould and bacteria on the surface. This is especially important in Singapore's wet markets, food and beverage outlets, gyms, and medical facilities where hygiene is paramount.
If you've been putting off a ceiling renovation because you're worried about how it will hold up in Singapore's climate, a stretch ceiling is the answer. Contact our team for a free site assessment and we'll recommend the right membrane for your specific space and conditions.
